English Abstract

Beginning January 1, 2025, IEEE Journal of Emerging and Selected Topics in Power Electronics (IEEE JESTPE) appointed the new Editor-in-Chief (Dr. Fernando Briz) and the Deputy Editor-in-Chief (Dr. Sudip Mazumder). Please read below to learn more about these new volunteers who will oversee the publication of IEEE JESTPE. In addition, IEEE JESTPE would like to thank Dr. Tsorng-Juu (Peter) Liang for serving as the Editor-in-Chief for IEEE JESTPE from 2022 to 2024. Show All Fernando Briz received the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Oviedo, Oviedo, Spain, in 1990 and 1996, respectively. He is currently a Full Professor with the Department of Electrical, Electronics, Communications and Systems Engineering, University of Oviedo, where he has been the Vice Dean and the Coordinator of Ph.D. studies. He is the author/co-author of more than 100 journal articles and more than 200 conference papers, mostly within IEEE in the fields of electric drives and power converters. He has been project manager of more than 70 projects, both public funded (European Union and Spanish Government) and in collaboration with industry. His research interests include electric drives, with the main focus on traction systems for railway applications and HEV and EV, as well as wind energy; electronic power converters mainly grid-tied, including APF, active front ends, and solid states transformers; energy storage systems, including batteries, flywheels, and H2 and their integration in power systems; and control systems and digital signal processing. Dr. Briz is a member of the IEEE TAB Awards and Recognition Committee. He has been the Officer of the IEEE Industry Applications Society (IAS)–Industrial Drives Committee (IDC) from 2012 to 2018. He served as the Chair for the IAS-Industrial Power Conversion System Department (IPCSD) in 2022 and 2023 and has been a member for the IAS Executive Board in 2022 and 2023. He has been the Deputy Editor-in-Chief for the IEEE Journal of Emerging and Selected Topics in Power Electronics (IEEE JESTPE) from 2022 to 2024. He has been TPC of ECCE’24 and IEMDC’19 and has served as the Vice-Chair and in scientific committees for several conferences, including ECCE, IAS AM, IEMDC, ICEM, and ICEMS. He is also an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications and IAS Open Journal. Show All Sudip K. Mazumder (Fellow, IEEE) received the M.S. degree from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in 1993 and the Ph.D. degree from Virginia Tech in 2001. He was a Distinguished Professor, a Robert Uyetani Professor of engineering, and a Professor and the Director of the Laboratory for Energy and Switching-Electronic Systems (LESES), Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Illinois Chicago (UIC), in 2001. He has over 30 years of professional experience encompassing academia and industry. Dr. Mazumder is a fellow of AAAS. He is a recipient of the 2023 IEEE Power and Energy Society’s Ramakumar Family Renewable Energy Excellence Award “for contributions to high frequency link power conversion and control technologies for renewable energy.” He received several IEEE awards/honors, including the TPEL Prize Paper Awards (2022 and 2002) and Highlighted Papers (2018, 2022, 2023, and 2024), the PELS Magazine Featured Article (2023), the TBME Featured Article (2023), and the IEEE International Future Energy Challenge Award (2005). He is a recipient of the most prestigious awards at UIC, including the Distinguished Researcher Award in Natural Sciences and Engineering (2020), the Inventor of the Year Award (2014), and the University Scholar Award (2013). Earlier, he received the prestigious U.S. Office of Naval Research (ONR) Young Investigator Award (2005) and the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award (2003). He served as the Chair for PELS TC5 on Sustainable Energy Systems from 2015 to 2020. He also served as the General Chair for PEDG 2023 and serves as the General Co-Chair for ECCE 2024. He served as a Distinguished Lecturer for PELS from 2016 to 2019. He also served as the Editor at Large for IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics (IEEE TPEL) from 2019 to 2024. Effective January 2025, he will become the Deputy EiC for the IEEE Journal of Emerging and Selected Topics in Power Electronics (IEEE JESTPE). He served as the Guest EiC/Editor for IEEE TPEL in 2013 and 2014 and 2023 and 2024, IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics in 2013 and 2014 and 2016 and 2017, and IEEE JESTPE in 2019 and 2021 and 2021 and 2022; and an Editorial Board Member for IEEE Transactions initiating in 2003. He has served as an Administrative Committee Member and a Member at Large for PELS since 2015 and 2020, respectively.
