English Abstract

Abstract As the global demand for sustainable energy continues to escalate, photovoltaic windows (PV windows) are emerging as a promising building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) solution. This is due to their dual potential in reducing building energy consumption while simultaneously harnessing renewable energy. This research presents an analytical solution for the energy assessment model of semi-transparent photovoltaic double glazing (STPV-DG) by simplifying the thermal balance equation nodes. This novel methodology can significantly reduce computational speed, offering a convenient and efficient approach for the engineering assessment of energy performance in STPV-DG. The efficacy of the proposed model was validated through comparison with experimental data, demonstrating a high degree of congruence. Additionally, an equivalent electricity method is employed, which converts non-electric forms of energy into electrical energy according to the practical cooling and heating coefficients of heat pumps. Taking Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou as examples, the annual comprehensive performance of STPV-DG and double glazing (DG) south facing window system is comparatively analyzed. The results show that by comparing the net electricity generation between STPV-DG and DG, it has been observed that in Guangzhou, the STPV-DG outperforms the DG by a margin of 60.6 k W h / m 2 . By contrast, Shanghai predicts a net electricity generation of 33.8 k W h / m 2 , while Beijing predicts a net electricity generation of 18.0 k W h / m 2 . In the comparisons among the three cities, in regions with extended cooling period, such as Guangzhou, the potential for energy savings with the application of STPV-DG is the greatest, followed by Shanghai, and then Beijing. STPV-DG is more advantageous in regions with extended cooling periods.
